HairTake: Fragrance is a HIDDEN Killer

*INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT VIDEO SERIES

If you want more info on the topic fragrance in hair products this video is the one for you ingredient spotlight: FRAGRANCE

HARD TRUTHS

Mental image: you walk into a cosmetics store, searching for your new holy grail hair product to add to your collection. The choices are endless, with an array of scents that captivate your senses. But, suddenly, I figuratively knock you over the head and out of your trance with this info: All of these fragrances contain hidden dangers that can impact your health. In this blog post, we will delve into the world of undisclosed fragrances that contain phthalates found in beauty products and shed light on why it's crucial for your well-being to opt for phthalate-free alternatives.

PHTHALATES BASICS

Phthalates are a group of chemical compounds commonly used as plasticizers, making them flexible and durable. They have also been extensively used in the fragrance industry to enhance the longevity and stability of scents. Unfortunately, several studies have raised concerns about the potential health risks associated with phthalates, leading to increased scrutiny and calls for their regulation (which is why we have taken matters into our own hands at Hairtage with our anti toxic* seal).

HIDDEN DANGERS OF UNDISCLOSED FRAGRANCES

One of the main issues with undisclosed fragrances is the lack of transparency in the beauty industry. Many products simply list "fragrance" or "parfum" on their ingredient labels, without disclosing the specific compounds used. This opacity makes it challenging for consumers to make informed decisions about the products they purchase and use.

What makes undisclosed fragrances concerning is the potential presence of phthalates. Phthalates can disrupt the endocrine system, which regulates hormone production and function in our bodies. Studies have linked phthalate exposure to a variety of health issues, including reproductive problems, hormonal imbalances, developmental abnormalities, and even certain cancers.

THE HEALTH EFFECTS OF PHTHALATE FRAGRANCE VS. PHTHALATE FREE FRAGRANCE

Opting for phthalate-free fragrances can significantly contribute to your overall health and well-being. By choosing products that clearly state their ingredients and exclude phthalates, you are making a conscious effort to reduce your exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

STILL NOT CONVINCED? HERE’S A BREAKDOWN OF THE ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS OF PHTHALATES

Hormonal Balance

Phthalates can disrupt the delicate hormonal balance in our bodies, potentially leading to fertility issues, menstrual irregularities, and imbalances in your gut microbiome. Choosing phthalate-free fragrances can help safeguard your hormonal health.

Respiratory Health

Fragrances that contain phthalates can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which contribute to indoor air pollution. By choosing phthalate-free options, you can reduce the risk of respiratory irritation and allergic reactions triggered by these compounds.

Environmental Impact

Phthalates not only pose a risk to human health but also have detrimental effects on the environment. These chemicals can leach into waterways, contaminate ecosystems, and harm aquatic life. Opting for phthalate-free fragrances promotes sustainable and eco-friendly choices.

Consumer Empowerment

By demanding transparency and avoiding undisclosed fragrances, consumers can exert pressure on the beauty industry to prioritize safer ingredients. Your choices can drive positive change and encourage brands to adopt more responsible practices.

HOW TO AVOID PHTHALATES

The answer is easy. All you have to do is take every product you purchase to the lab in your house and check it for chemical compounds such as phthalates. Super feasible right? So obviously this is mere sarcasm. As a consumer, because of the discrepancy in regulation of beauty products there’s no way to really know what product does or does not contain phthalates. A rule of thumb is to look for fragrance free products or products that disclose what fragrance they are using. But if you either don’t have the time to do all this label analysis or just lack trust where this is concerned  (I don’t blame you then), Hairtage is the place for you.

Hairtage exists to mend this gap through our regulated standard for hair products -the anti toxic* seal- and by giving you access to these anti toxic* hair products in one place. By supporting Hairtage, you are supporting this mission, and as more people hear about our mission we can expand our range of hair products for you.
